Mahjong is a digital adaptation of the classic tile-matching puzzle that requires patience, strategy, and a sharp eye. You are presented with a massive stack of 144 intricately carved tiles arranged in a layered formation, often called the "turtle" layout. Your goal is to completely clear the board by matching pairs of identical tiles, gradually dismantling the peaks and revealing the hidden layers below.
Every move demands careful planning, as matching the first available pair can easily trap you later in the game. It is a slow-paced, relaxing experience that rewards spatial awareness and pattern recognition. The satisfaction of uncovering a much-needed tile buried deep beneath a tall stack is exactly why this solitary puzzle format has remained so popular.
Controls
The entire game is played using a mouse or touchscreen.
- Select a tile: Left-click (or tap) on a free tile to highlight it.
- Match a pair: Left-click (or tap) on a matching free tile to remove both from the board.
Tips
- Target the high peaks: Always prioritize removing tiles from the tallest stacks. Leaving these for the end of the game will severely restrict your options and likely lead to a dead end.
- Wait before you match: If you spot three identical tiles available at the same time, look at what tiles are hidden beneath them before making a move. Match the pair that frees up the most buried tiles.
- Watch the seasons and flowers: Remember that Season and Flower tiles do not need an exact visual match. Any two Seasons or any two Flowers can be paired together, which can occasionally help you escape a tricky situation.
This puzzle is perfect for anyone looking to unwind with a quiet, mentally engaging activity without the pressure of a ticking clock or fast-paced action.
