About Freecell Solitaire

FreeCell Solitaire deals all 52 cards face-up across eight tableau columns from the start, so unlike Klondike there's no hidden information — every card is visible and, in principle, every deal is solvable with the right sequence of moves. Four free cells in the corner hold one card each temporarily, and four foundations collect each suit in order from Ace to King.

The skill is in sequencing: you build descending runs of alternating colors on the tableau, and use the free cells as scratch space to shuffle cards around when a column is stuck. Since nothing is hidden, a stalled game is a puzzle to solve rather than a bad shuffle to blame — working out which cards to park in the free cells, and in what order, is most of the game.

Controls

Click a card to pick it up, then click a column, free cell, or foundation to place it. Some versions also support click-and-drag.

Tips

  • Don't fill all four free cells early — once they're full, you can't move any pile larger than one card at a time.
  • Try to empty a whole tableau column when you can; an empty column works like a fifth free cell and can hold a longer run.
  • Move Aces and Twos to the foundations as soon as they're free — there's rarely a reason to hold them back.

Freecell Solitaire FAQ

How do you move cards in FreeCell?
Click a card to select it, then click the column, free cell, or foundation you want to move it to. Some versions also let you click-and-drag.
What are the free cells for?
Each of the four free cells can hold one card temporarily, giving you space to shuffle cards around when a tableau column is stuck.
Is every FreeCell deal winnable?
Almost all deals are solvable since every card is visible from the start, but you still need to work out the right order of moves — a stuck game usually means a sequencing mistake, not a bad shuffle.
How do you win?
Move every card to the four foundations, building each suit up in order from Ace to King.
